Field Day . Marysville . 2014

        Yesterday St. John Lutheran School traveled to Marysville for a friendly invitational between the three Lutheran Schools in this area.  The competition was between St. John (Alma), Good Shepherd (Marysville), and Linn Lutheran.  The Lord blessed us with beautiful weather (80 degrees and sunny!) and no injuries (except mild sunburns).
     Normally I post activities that are limited to our K & 1 class, but I wanted to share this whole-school experience on our blog.

"Look!  We've got Larry Boy Ears!     I....am....that...hero!"

"Jack be limbo, Jack be quick, Jack go under the limbo stick.....let's do the limbo rock!"

Across the street, there was a park and some historical buildings.  I took the kindergarten to the park after they finished their events.  They loved looking at the buildings "from back then." (as they called it)

{Book Reports}

This week our class wrote a book report on a book they read recently.

{Kansas Cookies: A Yummy Lesson!}

        The Kindergarten & 1st grade class is studying map skills in social studies.  This week we made an edible map of Kansas.  The no-bake cookie dough was made of peanut butter, caro syrup, & powdered milk.  The students shaped the dough over a printed outline of Kansas that was covered in Saran Wrap.  Next, we added the 5 main rivers using blue icing.  Yellow M & M's marked our state capital, Topeka.  A blue M & M represented the Alma, McFarland, Paxico area.  Finally we added chocolate chips to symbolize the Flint Hills & Smokey Hills. (Although this time of year ALL the hills are smokey!)
        After eating out tasty maps, we wrote about this lesson in our journals.

{An Alarming Field Trip}

      Today our class visited the Alma Fire Station.  Mr. Marty and Mr. Gary taught us a lot about fire safety and how the Alma Fire Dept. fights fires.  We learned about each truck and what it was used for.  (Some are used primarily for fighting grass fires when the farmers conduct  their spring burn.)

     As a teacher, I was thrilled when I was chatting outside with a couple parents and their children after school.  There was a fire call and three emergency vehicles flew by.  The students witnessing this were able to identify the vehicles and what they do.  They were so excited to see these vehicles in action!   It makes a teacher's heart swell when she sees how much her students have learned! J

 .....Coming soon....students will write about their experience at the fire station.....
